How do we engage with our city not on a physical level, but an emotional one? What makes a city more equitable? How do we update our infrastructure while considering the emotional consequences of shared spaces? How can parks, piers, dog parks and libraries build social capital and strengthen social bonds?

Author Peter Kageyama will address these questions and more at Tiger Bay on October 23rd. Kageyama’s new book, The Emotional Infrastructure of Places is the third in a trilogy that includes For the Love of Cities: The Love Affair Between People and Their Places (recognized by Planetizen in 2012 as a Top 10 Book in urban planning, design and development) and Love Where You Live: Creating Emotionally Engaging Places.

In it, Kageyama writes about many local examples including The St. Pete Pier and archetypal co-creator Bob Devin Jones. He explores the importance of love and emotional engagement with our places and the ecosystem that “co-creators” – people who love their communities – inhabit, and how supporting them and their work can engender connected, emotionally engaged, and thriving places.
